Legendary UCLA basketball coach John Wooden (1910-2010) was renowned for his surprising instructions at the start of each season. Instead of a speech to his players about team spirit or strategy he began with simple advice on how to properly put on socks and shoes.
In basketball, as in the rest of life, your feet are very important. Taking care of the little things at the start can make all the difference by the end. As we approach the busy back to school season and the end of summer holidays it may well be a good time to reflect on Wooden's simple advice.
